Going green is much more than a trend, it is becoming a way of life. With the prevalence of eco-friendly cars and greener building materials hitting the market, it is becoming easier than ever to get a green label or certification as a facility manager. While looking to get your green certifications for your property, make sure to keep these accreditations in mind.

Energy Star – the goal of Energy Star is to reduce the amount of energy that is consumed each day. Energy Star also has performance evaluation tools that are available that can be very helpful when trying to find ways to cut down on the amount of energy that is used at your property. They will offer benchmark comparisons of facilities that are comparable to yours that can let you know where any improvements at your property can be made.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – also known as LEED, qualifying for the certification can come at a high price, but it is the best way to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility. It also helps to generate extra cost savings by lower overall energy bills.
Professional accreditations – there are various associations and organizations that offer eco-friendly accreditation, including IFMA’s Sustainability Facility Professional, LEED’s Accredited Professional, Association of Energy Engineers’ Certified Energy Manager, and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers’ High-Performance Building Design Professional Certification. The more accreditations that you are able to qualify for, the more you can show that you are dedicated to the environment with all of your property management systems.
